At Unmasking the Fear Counseling Services, our mission is to help you uncover and embrace the full truth about yourself. We believe that facing and owning your truth opens the door to a world where you no longer gaslight yourself—denying or distorting your reality to fit into societal norms or meet external expectations.

Gaslighting is a psychological manipulation technique that causes someone to doubt their sanity, perception of reality, or memories. When you gaslight yourself, you deny your own truths, feelings, and experiences. This self-deception leads to living an inauthentic and unfulfilled life. At Unmasking the Fear, we guide you to walk in truth—acknowledging your hurts, dreams, flaws, goodness, and shortcomings. By embracing your entire self, you can make informed decisions that truly serve you. These decisions are based on your dynamic truth and integrity, not on what others want for you or how they perceive you.

By embarking on this journey, you free yourself from societal expectations and build a life grounded in authenticity and self-love. We believe that truth, no matter how daunting, brings internal freedom, joy, self-love, and validation. Our healing and nurturing e-books, self-discovery workshops, and coursework are designed to be catalysts in achieving this freedom.

My Story

I grew up in Detroit, Michigan, during the 1960s—a time of significant civil growth and expansion, but also a period marked by great turmoil and societal upheaval. My upbringing was steeped in poverty and instability. I lived in 26 different houses and attended 15 different schools, each move a testament to the chaos that was my constant companion.

We were very poor. Toilet paper was sometimes softened pages from the yellow pages or newspaper. Toothpaste was often table salt or soap. Dinner might be one chicken cut into pieces to serve six people, accompanied by a couple of sides, and there was rarely enough for seconds. There were too many times when there was no running water, adding to the daily struggles of my tumultuous environment.

My father was physically abusive to my mother, who grappled with her mental health. Despite the chaos, my parents were complex individuals, each dealing with their own battles. My father’s actions were a product of his own struggles, and my mother’s challenges with mental health were a reflection of the times and the lack of support available from my dad and the world around her. The American way often involves gaslighting all unwanted truths, and why wouldn’t that shape my world? My mother’s mental health was certainly a reflection of the times, but it was also exacerbated by the lack of support from those around her.

Chaos was my norm. Yet, amidst this turmoil, I found resilience. My journey into the therapeutic space was driven by a need to address my own personal turmoil. I pursued education and training in an effort to understand and heal myself, sometimes without fully admitting the depth of my own struggles. I knew something was off within me, but admitting it felt like acknowledging my flaws, my inadequacies, and my perceived lack. However, the truth is, we are all on a quest to find that place inside ourselves that feels like home—a place where freedom, love, and authenticity reign.

Finding Refuge

In the midst of chaos, I found refuge in several places that offered me a semblance of peace and stability. One such place was the church. Church was a sanctuary, sometimes an all-day refuge where I could escape the turmoil at home and find solace in community and spirituality. The hymns, the prayers, and the sense of belonging provided a temporary reprieve from the instability of my daily life.

Friends’ homes also served as sanctuaries, though I often stayed too long, unaware of overstaying my welcome. These homes offered a glimpse into what stability looked like, and even though I sometimes wore out my welcome, these moments of normalcy were invaluable.

As I grew older, institutions like Job Corps and college became my places of refuge and peace. Job Corps provided me with structure, education, and a sense of purpose. It was there that I began to see a future beyond the chaos of my childhood. College furthered this journey, offering not just education but a community of peers who, like me, were seeking to build better lives for themselves.

These places of refuge were pivotal in my journey. They provided the space I needed to breathe, to dream, and to begin the hard work of healing and self-discovery.

True Meat on the Bone Advice

Whether or not you book an appointment with us, here are practical steps you can take to start embracing your truth and transforming your life:

1. Self-Reflection: Take time daily to reflect on your thoughts and feelings. Journaling can be a powerful tool for this. Write about your day, your emotions, and any situations that triggered strong feelings. This practice helps you become more aware of your internal world and recognize patterns that may be hindering your authenticity.

2. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to things that do not serve your well-being. Setting healthy boundaries is essential for maintaining your mental and emotional health. Identify areas in your life where you feel overextended or taken advantage of, and start practicing assertive communication to protect your space and energy.

3. Seek Support: Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage you to be your true self. This might mean reevaluating your current relationships and making difficult choices about who you spend your time with. Look for friends, family members, or support groups that uplift and inspire you.

4. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practice mindfulness and meditation to stay connected with your present reality. These practices help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment, allowing you to respond to situations with greater clarity and calmness.

5. Educate Yourself: Read books and articles about self-awareness, mental health, and personal growth. Knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions about your life and understand the dynamics of your mind and emotions.

6. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that everyone makes mistakes and has flaws. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would offer to a friend. Self-compassion fosters a healthier relationship with yourself and reduces the tendency to self-gaslight.

7. Daily Affirmations: Start your day with positive affirmations. These are statements that affirm your value, capabilities, and intentions. For example, “I am worthy of love and respect,” “I am capable of achieving my goals,” or “I trust my intuition and honor my feelings.” Repeating these affirmations daily can shift your mindset and reinforce a positive self-image.

8. Identify Your Values: Take some time to identify what truly matters to you. What are your core values? These might include honesty, integrity, kindness, or creativity. Knowing your values helps you align your actions and decisions with your true self, leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life.

9. Create a Vision Board: Visualize your dreams and goals by creating a vision board. This can be a physical board with images and words that inspire you or a digital version using online tools. A vision board serves as a daily reminder of your aspirations and motivates you to stay focused on your path.

10. Physical Activity: Engage in regular physical activity that you enjoy. Exercise not only improves your physical health but also boosts your mental well-being. Whether it’s walking, dancing, yoga, or any other form of movement, find what works for you and make it a part of your routine.
